Get to Know Us

Norwegian Cruise Lines ranks as the third largest cruise line in the industry. It rounds out the “big 3” publicly traded entities in the cruise industry along with its bigger South Florida rivals Royal Caribbean Group and Carnival Corporation. Like Carnival, it is based in the  Miami-Dade County suburb of Doral, Florida. It’s headquarters is located about 10 miles west of the Port of Miami and the Miami division of the federal Southern District of Florida. Not surprisingly, like RCCL and Carnival, Norwegian also requires passengers that are seeking to pursue injury claims against them to do so in the federal courts of the Southern District of Florida’s Miami Division. Have you been injured while on a Norwegian cruise ship? At Delgado Trial Attorneys, we have been fighting for the rights of injured accident victims and their families since 1977.

About Norwegian Crusie Lines

Headquartered in Miami, Florida, Norwegian Cruise Line was founded in 1966 and has become one of the largest cruise operators in the world. Originally, it was named Norwegian Caribbean Lines in 1966 by Norwegian Knut Kloster and Israeli Ted Arison who shortly after went on to start rival cruise line Carnival.

Norwegian is known in the industry as a pioneer of sorts including the “air and sea” package concept that facilitated the arrival of many first time cruisers that were far from port cities on the coast that the cruise ship departed from. They also were trail blazers in the concept of creating new ports that suited cruise line routes by developing small coastal settlements like Ocho Rios, Jamaica, that were conveniently located instead of routing ships based on then existing options.

It was also a pioneer with the mega ship concepts that are popular in the industry today. In fact, in 1979, Norwegian purchased transoceanic liner S/S France from the French line originally built to service transatlantic sailings in the 1950s and 1960s.

Norwegian underwent a corporate restructuring in 2013 in preparation for its IPO on the New York Stock Exchange under the parent holding corporation Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. It generated 6.06 billion in revenue in 2018 and is directed by CEO Harry Sommer and CEO of its  parent corporation NCLH Frank Del Rio. parent Corporation NCLH is also the entity that owns sibling lines Oceania Cruises and Regents Seven Seas Cruises.

Norwegian' Cruise Lines' Fleet

As of 2020, Norwegian Cruise Lines operated 17 ships around the globe with plans to expand. An additional 6 ships are on order in the new class of vessels based on the newly designed Prima class of ships built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri from secret plans that were given the codename Project Leonardo. Common Injuries & Accidents on an NCL ship

Major cruise lines, like Norwegian Cruise Line owe their passengers a duty of care. This duty of care includes: (1) providing a reasonable amount of security against physical harm, including criminal activity and assault; and (2) they must ensure that the ship and the equipment are in reasonable working condition, and its crew, are adequately trained to perform their assigned tasks respectfully.

Cruise lines are responsible for passenger injuries that occur both on and off the ship. Passengers who are injured while on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, tender, or in port should seek immediate medical attention for their injuries and should promptly report the incident. Many times, cruise lines count on passengers not reporting, and they will use the defense of “lack of reported incident” to fight a claim that is later filed.

Some of the most common accidents that occur on cruise ships include:

  • Slip and Falls
  • Trip and Falls
  • Gangway Accidents
  • Drownings and Pool Accidents
  • Malfunctioning Doors or Equipment
  • Tender Mishaps
  • Shore Excursion Accidents

Tips to Maximize Your Recovery

Time is of the essence, when filing a lawsuit against a major cruise line like Norwegian. An experienced cruise ship accident attorney will tell you that these claims must be filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida, in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Passengers have just one year from the date of the incident to file a claim.

It is important that you hire an attorney experienced in handling cruise injuries in order to successfully recover damages to compensate for an injury sustained while aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Injuries sustained on a cruise ship, must be thoroughly documented. Immediately after the accident occurs, doing the following can help maximize your recovery:

  • Photograph the scene of the accident.
  • Inform crew members.
  • Record the names of witnesses.
  • Seek immediate medical attention.
  • Request a copy of medical records.
